PIRACY OF S.S. 'DELI MARU"

(Continued).

There is little doubt that the Chinese "Boys" usually let out their cabin (inside the grilled area) whenever they can get a reasonable price. This is corroborated by the Chinese Boys themselves who on this occasion shared $12 between them as the price of the cabin from Swatow to Hongkong. The Compredore in many ships, probably does the same. It is considered that there was insufficient supervision of passengers and guards by the ship's officers. It is also noted, contrary to the report of the Master, that passengers were never properly searched on embarking, except at Takao where this is done by the Customs Authorities. Passengers resent searching by Indian guards and if a guard were to make himself officious he would probably lose his job in the ship.
